When ATLiens Attack

Funky Atlantans like to call themselves ATLiens in the tradition of OutKast, but singer Janelle Monae truly rocks interplanetary soul siren style. After a bout of bidding wars by urban underground labels, Monae spent a few years with Purple Ribbon (run by OutKast's Big Boi) before signing to P. Diddy's Bad Boy, which rereleased her recent EP The Chase. Upbeat tunes like "Violet Stars Happy Hunting" are inspired by classic sci-fi film Metropolis, but also seem to offer a cheeky nod to earlier space explorations of bands like the B-52s.
